Lauren and Matt live in New York, but they flew across the country for their Malibu Rocky Oaks engagement session in California. Set high above the Malibu Hills, the estate offered exactly what we wanted: sweeping mountain views, Italian-inspired architecture, and warm California light. Add a vintage silver Chevrolet Corvette, and the afternoon quickly took on the feeling of an editorial rather than a traditional engagement session.
An Italian-Inspired Escape in Malibu
Malibu Rocky Oaks has a way of transporting you somewhere else entirely. Its Tuscan-inspired villa sits above the surrounding vineyards and mountains, creating a setting that feels more like the Italian countryside than Southern California.
We began around the estate, using its stone architecture, archways, and quieter corners for portraits. Against those warm, textural surroundings, Lauren and Matt’s styling felt sophisticated without becoming overly formal.
The vintage silver Corvette introduced a completely different element. Its sculptural lines and metallic finish contrasted beautifully with the natural landscape and old-world architecture. Rather than using the car simply as a prop, we incorporated it into the movement of the session. The result felt cinematic, polished, and unmistakably California.
Golden Hour Above the Malibu Hills
As the afternoon continued, we moved away from the villa and toward Malibu Rocky Oaks’ panoramic viewpoints.
This is where the property becomes truly extraordinary.
From its mountaintop setting, the landscape seems to unfold endlessly in every direction. Rolling hills fade into the distance while vineyards and rugged California terrain fill the foreground. As the sun dropped lower, everything shifted into warm shades of gold.
That light completely changed the photographs.
The architecture had given us structure and texture earlier in the session. Now, the open landscape gave Lauren and Matt room to move. The photographs became quieter and more relaxed as we followed the remaining light across the property.
A Destination Engagement Session in California
Traveling for engagement photographs gives couples an opportunity to create something entirely separate from everyday life. Lauren and Matt could have photographed their engagement in New York. Instead, they chose to turn it into a destination experience.
