Joshua Tree Engagement Session | An Editorial Desert Escape
For Antonette and Matt, their Joshua Tree engagement session was more than an afternoon of portraits. The Nashville-based couple flew to California specifically for the experience, trading the city for the quiet, otherworldly landscape of Joshua Tree National Park.
There is something about the California desert that feels especially suited to engagement photographs. The landscape is dramatic without becoming distracting. Meanwhile, the neutral palette creates an incredible backdrop for thoughtful fashion and understated portraits. In the fall, cooler temperatures and softer light make Joshua Tree even more beautiful.
I arrived several hours early to scout locations and study how the light was moving across the park. Because the desert changes dramatically throughout the afternoon, that extra time allowed us to begin exactly where the light felt best.
Chasing Light Through Joshua Tree
From the moment Antonette and Matt arrived, their energy made photographing them effortless. We began among the boulders, climbing just high enough to catch warm sunlight reflecting across the rocks.
Rather than relying on heavily posed photographs, we explored. Antonette and Matt walked hand in hand, climbed across the landscape, and settled naturally into the quiet of the desert. Joshua Tree offers an almost endless collection of backdrops. Still, the landscape never needed to become the entire photograph. It simply created space for the two of them.
As the afternoon continued, the light softened and we moved deeper into the park for their second look.
An All-Black Look Against the California Desert
Before the session, Antonette and Matt told me they envisioned wearing black together for part of their portraits. It was an incredibly simple decision that completely transformed the photographs.
Against the muted colors of the desert, their monochromatic wardrobe created striking contrast. Matt finished his look with a crisp Stetson, while Antonette’s red hair caught the remaining warmth of the afternoon light.
The combination felt less like traditional engagement photography and more like an editorial portrait session. Yet nothing about it felt overly styled. Their wardrobe complemented the landscape rather than competing with it.
A Destination Engagement Session in California
One of my favorite things about photographing a destination engagement session is the freedom it gives couples to choose somewhere simply because it inspires them.
Joshua Tree offers that freedom in abundance. Within a relatively small area, the landscape shifts between open desert, sculptural rock formations, and the park’s unmistakable Joshua trees. As a result, one afternoon can produce photographs that feel remarkably varied while still belonging to the same story.
For couples traveling to California or looking beyond Los Angeles for their engagement photographs, Joshua Tree creates something entirely different. It’s quiet, cinematic, and just unpredictable enough to make every session feel individual.
Antonette and Matt traveled from Nashville for exactly that experience. By sunset, we had climbed boulders, chased beautiful desert light, and created photographs that felt unmistakably like them.
And that will always be more interesting than simply choosing a beautiful backdrop.
